What's Cooking?

Storing and Preparing Food in Barrington from 1740-1940

Spring-Summer 2011

This exhibit examined cooking devices for chopping, grinding, mashing, storing, stocking, preserving, blending, mixing, rolling, and cooking foods. Scenes from a hearthside kitchen, an 1890s kitchen with cast iron stove, and a 1930s kitchen featuring a Glendale Kitchenette stove, were on display. Included the history of everyday foods like breakfast cereals and about "high tech" cooking tools such as an apple masher, a stone mortar and pestle, and a butter churn.
